1. Kung Fu Uniform (功夫服)

The classic Chinese martial arts uniform, descended from Shaolin Temple training wear. Designed for full-range dynamic movement — strikes, kicks, throws, and ground work.

Structure: Cross-collar jacket with snap or frog button closure, matching trousers with elastic or drawstring waist. Some styles include a sash (腰带).

Sleeve options: Short sleeve (summer/training), 3/4 sleeve (standard), long sleeve (formal/traditional). The 3/4 length is most versatile — allows wrist movement visibility for technique correction.

Colors: Black (most common), white (Shaolin tradition), navy, grey, red. Competition uniforms can be any solid color with contrasting trim.

2. Tai Chi Uniform (太极服)

Tai Chi uniforms are designed for slow, flowing movements and emphasize elegance and comfort. The looser cut allows the diaphragm to expand fully for deep breathing.

Structure: Mandarin collar jacket with frog buttons, loose sleeves (often flared), matching wide-leg trousers. Some sets include a matching Tai Chi fan.

Key difference from kung fu: Tai Chi uniforms are intentionally looser and longer. The sleeves extend past the wrist and the jacket is longer (hip-length vs waist-length). The fabric is lighter to create flowing movement.

Best fabrics: Cotton-linen blend (best for daily practice — breathable, softens with washing), pure linen (elegant but wrinkles), silk (formal practice and demonstrations).

Colors: White is traditional and most popular. Black and navy are common alternatives. For demonstrations: ivory, cream, or light blue.

3. Wushu Competition Uniform (武术比赛服)

Modern Wushu is an Olympic-recognized sport with specific uniform regulations set by the International Wushu Federation (IWUF).

IWUF competition requirements:

Fitted jacket with mandarin collar and frog buttons, matching trousers. Must be a single solid color or traditional brocade pattern. No logos except national/team emblems (max 20cm²). Sash/belt required for some events. Sleeves must reach the wrist. Trousers must reach the ankle.

4. Sanda & Wing Chun

Sanda (散打): Chinese kickboxing uses athletic-style uniforms — fitted shorts and a compression or loose jacket. The cut resembles MMA shorts with Chinese design elements. Requires freedom of movement for kicks, punches, and throws. Most practitioners wear a fitted jacket + shorts in team colors.

Wing Chun (咏春): The most minimalist uniform. Many Wing Chun schools simply wear a school T-shirt with black kung fu pants. Formal training uses a simple black jacket with white buttons. No sash — Wing Chun uses a ranking system that doesn't display belts. Focus is entirely on function, not appearance.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between a kung fu uniform and a Tai Chi uniform?
Kung Fu uniforms are more fitted with shorter sleeves and snap buttons, designed for dynamic strikes. Tai Chi uniforms are looser with flowing sleeves and mandarin collar, designed for slow graceful movements. Kung Fu uses heavier cotton; Tai Chi uses lighter fabrics.
What fabric should I choose?
Daily training: cotton or cotton-poly blend. Competition: silk or satin. Tai Chi: cotton-linen blend. Performance: silk brocade. Avoid 100% polyester for training — it traps heat.
How should a kung fu uniform fit?
Jacket should allow full arm extension without pulling. Sleeves at wrist bone. Pants at ankle. Loose enough for unrestricted movement, not so baggy that fabric catches during techniques.
What uniform for Wushu competition?
IWUF requires: fitted jacket with mandarin collar and frog buttons, matching trousers, solid color or traditional brocade. No logos except team emblems. Sash required for some events.
What color should my uniform be?
Traditional: white (Shaolin), black (general), blue/grey. Competition: any solid color. Tai Chi: white, black, or navy. Performance: bold colors with gold trim. Avoid neon for traditional practice.
How much does a martial arts uniform cost?
Practice cotton: $25-50. Quality with reinforced stitching: $50-100. Silk performance: $100-300. Competition Wushu: $150-400. Team discounts available for 5+ sets.
How do I care for my uniform?
Cotton: machine wash cold, hang dry. Silk/satin: hand wash or dry clean. Always wash after training. Iron on medium (cotton) or low with pressing cloth (silk). Do not bleach. Have 2+ uniforms for rotation.
